What is the good character policy?

Lamin Sarr

Are you looking to make an application for British citizenship?

Anybody over the age of ten who applies for naturalisation as a British citizen needs to be “of good character”. This is a mandatory requirement set out in Schedule 1 to the British Nationality Act 1981. Where a person is deemed by the Home Office not to be “of good character” then his or her application for citizenship will be refused. You can read a more detailed overview here: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/good-character-nationality-policy-guidance

As more people apply for British citizenship partly due to the end of free movement from the EU we are seeing more refusal due to good character.

If you are in doubt, tend ask a lawyer or a professional for some clarity. Don't wait to be refused.
